Discovering The Character Of God

You get to know someone by seeing what he does with his life, meeting him, and doing things together. The same is true about God. Through the stories of the Bible we get to know God, because they show us what God did and what is important to Him. Through the Bible, but also through prayer and worship, you can meet God so that what you know about Him is not just theoretical knowledge, but a personal experience. When you commit your live to Him, He leads you through life. You are His child and relate to Him as your heavenly Father every day. That is the best way to get to know the character of God.

God is spirit

The Bible says that God is spirit (John 4:24). Therefore getting to know God is more difficult than getting to know a fellow human being. God realised that, and had a radical solution: He became man! In Jesus Christ “the whole fullness of God dwells bodily” (Colossians 2:9). So if we are still in doubt about the character of God, we may look at the life of Jesus. When we know how Jesus is, we know how God is.

So what do we read in the Bible about God’s character?

God is trustworthy

First, God is trustworthy. If we get to know who God is, we do not need to be afraid that He will be different tomorrow. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). God always keeps His promises. Always.

God is love

Second, God is love (1 John 4:8). Jesus made that very clear. He loved the people that society spit out. He embraced children. He invited despised tax collectors to follow Him. Sharing God’s love with prostitutes was more important to Him than His reputation. And in this, Jesus is the perfect embodiment of His Father’s love. For it was God who gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

God is righteous

Third, God is righteous. “A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4). He loves truth and justice, and He hates lies and injustice. This perfect righteousness we also see in Jesus, who said “which one of you convicts me of sin?” (John 8:46).

God is holy

Fourth, God is holy. Isaiah 6:3 says “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!“. God is glorious, and His glory sets him apart from sin; that is, God is holy. Sin and God cannot go together. God is everything that is beautiful, sin is everything that is ugly. Because this same holiness is in Jesus, He is called “the Holy One of God” (John 6:69).

God is merciful

Fifth, God is merciful. There is one very striking passage in which the Lord declares His own character. The Lord appears to Moses on the mountain, and the next thing we read in Exodus 34:6-7 is: “The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” Here we see all the aspects of God character that were mentioned above. But what is most stressed is God’s mercy in forgiving sinners. That is fulfilled in Jesus. In His mercy, God sent Jesus to die for our sins. If we believe in Jesus, God adopts us as His children.

When we have become children of God, we have a lifetime of discovering more and more of God’s character. But trustworthiness, love, righteousness, holiness, and mercy certainly are at the heart of who God is.

Discovering The Character Of God Of War

SCHEDULING IN UNPREDICTABLE TIMES...

Discovering God S Way

Dear friends,

We are not only living in unprecedented times, but unpredictable times as well. With this in mind, I want to talk with you about our Bible Lab schedule in the near future...

I absolutely LOVED seeing many of you on September 26 for our outdoor gathering in the LLUC’s new amphitheater. It was so great to reconnect in person after nearly seven months apart! It showed us all in a very tangible way just how much we have deeply missed each others’ company. I have been working with the staff of the church to explore our next potential gathering date for the month of October.

Discovering The Character Of God In The Bible

Due to the current significant rise in new COVID-19 cases in our county, and in light of some of the things that we’ve learned from the attendance patterns at LLUC’s outdoor programs over the past couple of weeks, the church has chosen a thoughtful path: We will be placing a pause on all large gatherings for at least the rest of this month. But by “pause” the LLUC leadership does not simply mean that they are going to wait and see what comes next. What they will be doing is working diligently during this time to create actionable steps and measures to insure the safety and health of all participants. As soon as these new policies and procedures are in place, I will communicate with you what this will mean for our future Bible Lab gatherings.

In the meantime, let me attempt to encourage you with some thoughts...

Discovering The Character Of God Friended

It seems to me that the majority of people in our community are really struggling, and are finding themselves in a slump that seven months of isolation has brought to our homes. It is now more difficult than ever to be optimistic, to fight negativity, and to not criticize and complain. It is my relentless passion to see The Bible Lab community back together and growing closer to God as we continue to discover more and more loving attributes of His character. Within the last 14 months, last Sabbath was the first Sabbath I have not worked, and it felt really strange. That should tell you how committed I am to making sure that we continue our conversations about God’s character. :-) For 4 1/2 months, we’ve produced a live YouTube program in my house. August and September we got to enjoy interacting with the long-anticipated broadcast of our video series on the book of Acts. During those 6 1/2 months I've had the opportunity to review our YouTube analytics and I discovered some very interesting insights. The bulk of our viewership (84.5%) was coming from YouTube suggestions to people around the world. That was great news to me, because we were obviously being evangelistic with our programs and reaching a lot of people outside of our community. But I noticed a second statistic that gripped my attention. The number of people watching from the Loma Linda/Redlands/Southern California areas increasingly dropped week over week during the months of June and July. Even by using optimistic math and multiplying each of the views from these areas by two (assuming that couples were watching from the same screen), it was apparent to me that the same number of people who had shown up at least an hour and a half before the program in Randall Amphitheater to reserve a seat, were not connecting with us in this video format. This showed me clearly that we need to do everything possible to shift what we are doing to reclaim our community. That is why I was so excited to be able to gather on Sept. 26.

It is my fervent hope that we will be able to once again meet in person on a regular basis, but I have to ask for your patience. God is not finished with us yet. Perhaps now, during this moment of pause, God is allowing us time to share what we’ve learned with our loved ones in more personal settings. Please make use of all of the episodes and study guides on our website (www.TheBibleLab.com) to refresh your memory and to launch meaningful conversations with those with whom you can call, Zoom or safely meet with in person. Perhaps in these uplifting conversations God can use you to help lift people out of their dark slump. I know for myself, I never learn more about a topic than when God let’s me teach it.

Discovering The Character Of God Shall

Please rest assured that we will post an update just as soon as there are any new developments for safe, local gatherings and/or video programs for The Bible Lab. I love you all deeply, and pray for you daily. Remember, as the world continues to grow darker, God’s love shines even brighter. Use this time to share that light in your corner of the world.

Much love,
